From June 9th to 12th 2017 there have been nearly unstoppable fires along the Garden Route. The towns Knysna, Sedgefield, Bitou and George were just some of the affected areas. A drought that has been in the area for the past two years, as well as heavy wind storms on that weekend, made the fires travel fast. Water shortage negatively affected the work of the fire departments who have been working in shifts to fight the fires around the clock and bring them under control.
The fire has caused damages that are calculated to be in the billions. At least 7 people lost their lives, thousands lost their home. Acres of forest have burnt down and the wildlife that has been lost can’t be counted.
